westernized. she died yesterday. she's been in a hospital since being run over two weeks ago. police say the father was upset because she was living with her boyfriend and didn't live by traditional muslim values. before his hearing, a prosecutor called him a flight risk. >> the defendant tries to hide behind moral conditions but he also fled so the state has serious concerns that he would flea in he was released and he does have resources and others who would be willing to help him. he got as far as england. he clearly was able to get pretty far away from the jurisdiction in an attempt to escape responsibility for his actions. >> the boyfriend's mother was also struck by the car. family members said she is in serious but stable condition. a 25-year-old pregnant mother in pensacola, florida, is missing. she went to see her unborn baby

father on thursday and hasn't been seen next. watkins relatives are desperate and distraught. >> if anybody saw her, please come forward. >> reporter: pensacola police aren't commenting on any suspects or persons of interest but if you know something that might help them, the police number pensacola in florida is 850-435-1900. searchers combing north dakota range land for three missing college students have found no trace of the women. the only lead for police so far is a friend who got two calls from one of the women sunday night. both calls mentioned water and said they need help. the women all play softball for dickenson state. they are believed to be in a jeep cherokee with california plates.

a boy was found in a dryer at a neighbor's house. police say he drown. they say that he knew the 14-year-old boy accused of killing him and voluntarily went to his fresno, california, home. the child was killed within an hour and stuffed in a dryer. alex's mother says she's struggling with the fact that happened so close to home. >> my son was here and he would play here and i knew he was close by. we were trying to find out that he was only feet away from us. >> it appears the teen suspect acted alone but they're interviewing his family. prosecutors are decide whether to try the teen as an adult. >> new security measures in place at a california high school where police say a 15-year-old girl was gang raped last month. the district put up automated lights in the area where the attack allegedly occurred. today they are taking bids for security cameras.

the student assured people at a rally that the school is safe. church leaders called for 100 volunteers to help. >> we believe that if we had a presence on campus during the lunch hour and in the classroom that it would help curb some of the negative behavior. >> what i would say to parents is that i have two daughters myself. i would have my daughters going to richmond high. >> police have now made a seventh arrest in connection with the case and more may come soon. the latest suspect is a 21-year-old man arrested this morning on charges that could lead to life in prison if convicted. support is pouring in for the victim. another rally is set for this afternoon and richmond, california, police say people from around the world are sending donations even teddy bears because the girl collects them. almost a million people are having to find a new way around philadelphia today. no buses, subways, trolleys in the city of brotherly love. the largest transit union went on strike at midnight. talks broke down over pay,

pensions and work rules. transit officials say their offer was competitive. new jersey and virginia are choosing governors today in a special congressional election in new york has attracted a lot of outside attention to break it all down for us, we're joined by paul steinhauser in washington, deputy political director for our sister network, cnn. it's safe to say the republican party is splintered and nowhere is that more evidence than the new york 23rd congressional district well upstate. how much of a role did sarah palin in this? >> let's look at this district. three candidates in this race. district along the canadian border. there was an open seat. that's why we have an off-year election. republicans nominated dede scozzafava. that upset those on the right. they put their own person there. doug hoffman. that split on the right would allow bill owens, the democrat to win a district democrats

haven't won in more than 100 years. all of the action from t.e.a. party and sarah palin went to hoffman. the republican dropped out and endorsed a democrat. this is a real good battle between for the heart and soul of the republican party. >> hoffman has a slight lead? >> slight lead in the polls but one in five voters still undecided. >> let's talk about a national referendum in these off-year elections ever decide that in new jersey for example. the governor's race between corzine and chris christi. >> new jersey is a great case for incumbents next year. beware. a democratic governor in a democratic state. corzine is fighting for his political life right now. he's tied if you believe the polls with chris christie. and daggett has taken some of the vote away. it's tough to be the unbum want right now with the national climate the way it is there's specific problems in jersey.

very high tax rates there for people in that state. >> what about virginia and the race there? the republican is well in front. does this have any implications nationally or is this a factor of the obama surge from last year that can't be replicated now? >> virginia like new jersey will be decided by state issues and candidates themselves but republicans in that state are trying to nationalize the election in the way that mcdonnell tied to unpopular policies coming out of the obama white house and as you mentioned, a lot of first-time and new voters and young ethnic voters helped barack obama win in virginia but this is an off-year and you don't have excitement on the left like did you last year. >> turnout is light in atlanta. and houston as well. >> you have a lot of interesting mayoral contests across the country. let's start in new york city where michael bloomberg, the

two-term mayor fighting for a third term. as you mentioned, down in your way, city council woman mary norwood is hoping to become the first white candidate to win an atlanta mayoral contest in 40 years. boston, the man there, hoping to win an unprecedented fifth term as mayor and houston another interesting race. >> before we go, the main gay marriage vote, how is that expected to turn out? >> gay marriage legalized six months ago. voters will decide whether to keep that or strike it down like they did in california. >> we covered a lot of ground. thanks. appreciate it. nicholas cage, the oscar winner, flat broke. how deep in debt he reportedly is.

researchers say more kids are ignoring age requirements on

facebook and myspace. both websites require that you have to be 13 but it's ineffective. some kids pretend to be older when she sign up. 38% of kids 12 to 14, 38%, have online profiles. some experts say too much exposure at that young an age could lead to internet addiction brain damage even. others point out there's no solid research to back that up. it's our your views question of the day. what do you think? what about kids? young kids being on social networking sites mostly positive, mostly negative. jack is on the line. >> caller: i think it's like any other piece of technology. it depends on what you use it for. it's not bad or good. even at that age. i graduated from high school in 2003. in the late '90s and early 2000, this was getting off the ground. my generation was first into it. we were exposed to it at that age and i can't think of anybody

when it comes to hip-hop, old school is run dmc and l.l. cool jay. one college offers the nation's first degree on hip-hop. >> i can tell you that i think i need to go to this class actually. there's a lot about it i don't know. it is the first university to actually have a degree in this. we're talking about mcnally smith college. it's smith college of music in minnesota. it's the first accredited degree in hip-hop that started about two months ago. now, it may be unconventional but the school's president said this is very important art form that isn't going away. we can study its impact on people's lives and on society. you can compare it to a study on jazz and the semester course has 16 students. they're study be rap history,

composition and music and the music industry. one student said he actually dropped out of community college but this program actually lured him back to school. now he has aspirations of becoming a drummer and some of the instructors are actually hip-hop artists and deejays and if someone has a keen interest in this, this would be the perfect place to go. you get a degree in it. >> i bet there's a waiting list to get in. are you kidding? not too many cowboys raised out of the inner city. there's a 25-acre ranch in queens that's changing this. >> this story is a great read. it it tells a great story. this ranch is in queens. right on the corner of a busy highway but it is a place that will likely change many lives. this takes kids out of some very dangerous areas where they see a lot of drug deals and a lot of shootings and they come to this ranch and they learn about

horsemanship and about the old west and forgotten black west. it's run by the federation of black cowboys and it is truly a sanctuary for many of these kids from housing projects in brooklyn and queens and they even say that they would probably be members of a gang or robbing people if they didn't have this ranch to go to and the federation's president says all they see is violence and they come here and they don't have to worry about getting shot. the kids learn about black cowboy history and by the way, they can't ride until they actually learn how to care for horses, groom them and shovel after them if you know what i mean. >> an internationally known deejay. >> i clean. i groom her. comb her hair. maybe sometimes i get grass and then i'll come from back there and go sit up on a hill with

public mood one year after the election of president obama. one closely watched race is for the governor of virginia. creigh deeds, the one on the left, is trying to become the state's third straight democratic government. president obama carried virginia last year. the republican is bob mcdonnell, he is the favorite in the race. mcdonnell is the former state legislator and virginia attorney general as well. deeds has been a state senator for 18 years. let's talk about new jersey. the governor jon corzine is fighting hard for a second term. the latest polls show the democratic incumbent is running neck and neck with chris christie. there's a wild card in the deck, an independent candidate. his name is chris daggett. he is drawing significant support. president obama has campaigned with corzine as recently as sunday. sarah palin has been an endorsement of christie that was

cash for clunkers may be history but plenty of folks are still buying cars. does that mean the worst is over for the auto industry? . stephanie joins us. what's up, steph? >> reporter: richelle, there are still plenty of questions about how quickly and strongly the auto industry is recovering. but so far, the numbers are positive. we just heard from gm. and october sales rose 4%. gm also gained market share for the third month in a row. and more good news for ford. u.s. sales rose 3% in october from a year ago. analysts expected a decline. ford also says its market share rose for the 12th time in 13 months. overall, analysts predict october sales will top 10 million vehicles on an analyzed basis, up from about 9 million in september.

sales are not up across the board. chrysler sales fell 30% from a year ago. >> all right. there are still plenty of questions about how quickly and strongly the auto industry is recovering. so far, though, so far, so good? >> reporter: well, i don't know if we can go that far. that turns out to be the $62 billion question since that's how much they owe in bailout money. but a new report says the treasury recovery is likely to unveil its money in bailing out the companies. in the meantime, the gao wants to make sure the treasury is keeping a close eye on the investment in gm and chrysler and is recommending that treasury hire people for that job in particular and put together a formal plan for divesting the government's ownership stake. as always, we'll be watching to see exactly how it all happens.

"showbiz tonight's" brooke anderson is in hollywood to talk about this. brooke, tyra's recently lost some weight. >> she has. she's dropped a few dress sizes and a lot of us remember a couple of years ago, tyra on her talk show responding to unflattering paparazzi pictures of her in her swimsuit saying, kiss my fat behind, essentially. her message was to embrace your kerves, be proud and flaunt it. but now she's sending a different, yet similar message all at the same time.

take a look at a clip from her talk show that will be airing. she's talking about her weight and she's basically showing her brand-new shape. >> some past staff from the tie la show and some of my friends, we called it the get fit, get healthy challenge. at first it started off as a game and like trash talking like, you going down, i'm going to get you. it was fun but it turned into a lifestyle for me. i thought it was going to be a private thing that me and me friends were going to be doing. but then the media started taking notice and starting showing before-and-after pictures. i wasn't trying to proclaim to the world, i got fit. i was just getting healthy. >> she's got some moves there.

she's dropped 30 pounds and is healthier than she ever has been. she assures people, quote, i feel good about my body and my imperfections. now i really can say kiss my fat and still fat behind. and she says she no longer has chronic stomach pain. she says this is just about being healthy. >> and she said she was conflicted. how exactly does she justify her new stance? >> she says it's not about being skinny. she's not emaciated. she's a size 8 and she still has curves. she's talking about being fit and being healthy. i personally think it's a great message because we all need to strive to be as strongly and healthy as we can be because it's the best thing for us long term, not just for our bodies but also for our minds. >> 30 pounds is hard work, too. >> hard work. she's been working on it for about a year.

pr new york to california, it's election day again. voters will be picking governors. members of congress, big city mayors in today's off-year balloting. the results could be an indicator of the public mood one year after the election of president obama. one closely watched race is for governor of virginia. creigh deeds, the one on the left, is trying to become the state's third straight democratic governor. president obama did carry virginia last year. the republican, bob mcdonnell, is actually the favorite in this race. the last poll showed him with a double-digit dooed lead. mcdonnell is a former state legislator and virginia attorney general. deeds has been a state senator for 18 years.

now to new jersey where the governor jon corzine is fighting hard for a second term. the latest polls show the democratic incumbent is running neck and neck with chris christie. there's a wild card in the deck, the independent candidate, chris daggett who's drawing pretty significant support. president obama has campaigned with corzine as recently as sunday. former alaska governor sarah palin has reported an endorsement of christie that went out on those robecalls, the automatic phone calls that went out to prospective rotors. . and a congressional seat up in new york, a third-party conservative candidate doug hoffman has a chance to win because the republican nominee abruptly quit the race last week. today's special election will fill a seat that has been in republican hands for decades. los angeles has a new police

chief. he's named charlie beck for the job. he's widely viewed as a progressive reformer who's dedicated to fighting gang violence. a seventh person has been i rested in connection with the homecoming gang rape case in richmond, california. police and a s.w.a.t. team arrested a 21-year-old man early this morning on charges that could lead to life in prison if he's convicted. so far, five suspects have been charged in the case. a sixth person was released for insufficient evidence. new security measures have been put in place in the california high school where police say a 15-year-old girl was gang-raped. a 25-year-old pregnant mother in pensacola, florida, is missing. she went to see her unborn baby's father thursday and has not been seen since. he is married and one of his old neighbors said he was in a hurry to move out of his apartment over the weekend. relatives of wadkins are

desperate and distraught. >> i hope she's not hurt. if anybody knows anything or saw her, i hope they come forward. >> pensacola police aren't commenting on possible suspects or persons of interest. they still want to hear from people who know anything about this case. the number to the pensacola police department -- searchers looking for three missing college students haven't found a trace of the women. a friend got two calls from one of the women sunday night. both calls mentioned water and said they needed help. the woman plays softball for dickinson state university. police believe the three friends were out star-gazing. they're believed to be in a white 1997 jeep cherokee with california plates. a man accused of running over his own daughter could soon be facing more serious charges

because the young iraqi woman is now dead. she died just hours after her father appeared in court in arizona. our affiliate has more. >> reporter: 20-year-old left her husband in iraq, moved in with her boyfriend here and was getting into modeling. it enrarnlged her father who appeared in court today. according to prosecutor, almaleki has now admitted to running his daughter down in a jeep -- after the so-called honor killing, almaleki fled halfway around the world to london before he was caught and prosecutors suspect his family helped him run. >> reporter: as word of noor's death spreads, friends are

if you're pregnant and you're worried about getting swine flu, you may also be worried about getting the swine flu vaccine. public health officials are offering evidence to back them up. >> reporter: in an effort to prove the h1n1 vaccine is safe and effective, the federal government released data this week showing that nearly all the pregnant women who received one 15 microgram dose of the vaccine were protected from the swine flu. the director of the national institute of allergy and infeshs disease says approximately out of 100 women who participated in the h1n1 trial studies, more than 90% showed a robust immune response to a single dose of the h1n1 vaccine. he also notes at this time, there are no reported side effects. health officials also stress

that unlike the seasonal flu where those most affected were over the age of 65, the h1n1 virus seems to affect younger people, as well as pregnant women. those people are the ones that need protection. since the virus was first diagnosed in this country back in april, 28 pregnant women have died from complications caused by h1n1. for today's health minute, i'm reggie aqui. florida prosecutors will have an extra week and a half to file charges against five teenagers accused of deliberately setting a neighbor on fire. 15-year-old michael brewer has been in the hospital since october 12th with serious burns over 65% of his body. his doctor says he's heavily sedated and breathing through a ventilator but is responsive to people around him. >> you could call it communicating minimally in terms of, he will respond to commands to move an arm or squeeze a hand

or open on eye or close an eye sort of thing. no meaningful communication, no discussions or anything like that. >> four of the suspects could be charged as adults. the fifth one is 15 years old. he won't face charges unless michael brewer dies. when it comes to hip-hop, hold school is run dmc and l.l. cool j. one new college is offering the nation's first degree in hip-hop. that's one of the stories getting a lot of clicks today at cnn.com. dot-com's reggie aqui is here. >> reporter: drop it like it's hot. when you first hear this, you're surprised but it might be more surprising that we have ant seen this before. mcnally smith college a school of music, has rolled out this curriculum dealing with hip-hop. they started doing it about two months ago.

the school president says it's very important, this art form, and it's not going away. so he says they study the impact on people's lives in society. he says it's just as legitimate as studying jazz, which schools have done for many years. it's a three semester course. currently 16 students are enrolled. they study rap history, composition and music industry as a whole. the instructors know what they teach. they include hip-hop artists and deejays. i think that's great. >> i think it's great and they could have some of the best guest professors, that's for sure. >> reporter: that's right. imagine how fun that course would be. >> not too many cowboys come from the inner city. but you're telling me there's a 25-acre ranch in queens? >> reporter: who knew, right? it is up against a highway. you have to put that out there.

but there are 25 acres and there are horses on it. this is a program to help troubled kids. essentially what they're doing is teaching them how to take care of these horses to give them a sense of responsibility, to teach them new skills. and these are kids who otherwise may never have the chance to interact with horses or animals at all. the federation that has put this together, called the federation of black cowboys, their president says these are kids that just see violence in their lives. once they come here -- i should say they come there at night without worry about getting shot. they learn about black cowboy history and i think the important thing about all this is, they can't even get on the horse until they know how to take care of horse, how to clean the horse and clean the horse's mess. >> when i get here, i check on my horse. clean her feet, groom her, brush her down, comb her hair. and maybe sometimes i take her out to eat grass.

month against samuel levin claims levin, quote, lined his pockets with several million dollars in business management fees while sending cage down a path toward financial ruin and that cage is now, quote, forced to sell major assets and investments at a significant loss because of levin's incompetence, misrepresentations and recklessness. the actor owes unl sam more than $6 million in back taxes because, he says, levin never filed his taxes. here's what cage claims levin did or didn't do. according to the lawsuit, levin was supposed to provide accurate accounting statements, prepare and file income taxes and analyze the risk of potential investments in exchange for 5% of cage's gross earnings. instead, the actor is accusing levin of, quote, gross mismanagement of his affairs which resulted in significant monetary loss. the 45-year-old cage who won an oscar for his role in "leaving

police say a north carolina father shot and killed his wife and two teenage sons before turning the gone on himself. they were all found last night in their home in fayetteville, about 50 miles southwest of raleigh. people who live in the quiet, upscale neighborhood are in shock. the man was a real estate developer. investigators do note have a motive. at least they have not disclosed one. charges are expected to be upgraded against the father accused of running over his own daughter because he thought she was too westernized. the iraqi woman, just 20 years old, died yesterday. she had been in the hospital since being run over two weeks ago. the dad was upset that the girl, the daughter, was living with her boyfriend and didn't live by traditional muslim values. during a hearing before his daughter's death a prosecutor called him a flight risk. >> this defendant hopped two countries in an attempt to escape. and we believe that his family has given him assistance in his escape. by his own admission this was an intentional act. and the reason was that his

lawmakers want to ban pilots from using laptops in cockpits. remember the northwest airlines pilot that overshot minneapolis by 150 miles last month? the pilot said they were working on laptops when it happened. a bill could be introduced in about a week. other devices to be banned might include dvd players and mp3 players among others. it seems everybody is on facebook or myspace these days. everyone. but is little kids a good idea? how young is too young to log onto the sites and spend significant time on them? we're going to talk about that next.

a pursuit in the los angeles area has ended. officers shot and wounded the suspect as the car was surrounded by armed police vehicles. earlier police said there was a potential active shooter sitting in that car.

breaking news in the case of the women's bodies found in a cleveland sex offender's house. a seventh body has turned up, and detectives are continuing to work there with cadaver dogs. initially police found six bodies. one in a shallow grave in the backyard. all scattered from a roof crawl space all the way to the basement. they may have been there for years. the suspect, anthony sowell, was arrested last week. dozens gathered last night to remember the women found dead inside the home. investigators say it could be weeks before the bodies are all identified. the police chief is expected to hold a news conference in two and a half hours. 6:00 eastern time. to discuss the latest in this

failed to show up at sunday services. a colleague went to check on her and found her dead on church property. the fbi will not say where the vehicle we found. authorities are still waiting on autopsy before releasing more details on the killing. police say a north carolina father shot and killed his wife and two teenage sons before turning the gun on himself. they were found last night in their home about 50 miles southwest of raleigh, in fayetteville. people are in shock. they say the man was a real estate developer. investigators do not yet have a motive. a seventh person arrested in connection with a homecoming gang rape case. police arrested the 21-year-old man this morning on charges that could lead to life in prison if convicted. five suspects have been charged in the case so far. a sixth was released for insufficient evidence.

charges expected to be upgraded against the father accused of running over an his own daughter. the iraqi woman, just 20 years old, died yesterday. she has been in the hospital since being run over two weeks ago. the father was upset that her daughter was living with her boyfriend and didn't live by traditional muslim values. an honor killing, or attempted killing as it were. a prosecutor used the phrase and called him a flight risk. >> this defendant hopped two countries in an attempt to escape. we believe his family has given him assistance in his escape. by his own admission this was an an intentional act because his daughter brought shame on him and his family. we can't benaive and ignore the cultural aspect. and people will support him, including his family and people who share his beliefs.

back to brush fires. this is still the noon hour in pacific time. this is one of the helicopters looking over the scene of a brush fire that is threatening homes in the eastern l.a. suburb of diamond bar. there is -- they're dropping their water retardant on fire. this is along the 60 freeway, we think, immediately east of diamond bar, which is south of pamona in an area called diamond bar. this is burning through a lot of dry timber and brush. they're working eight separate fires along state route 60. several are all together blocked. so far no reports of injuries nobody has been evacuated to our knowledge. apparently according to unconfirmed reports officials think this is deliberately set. it is a case of arson. the biggest concern right now is

what's called the diamond ranch area. 150 firefighters are working this. authorities have also requested two of the giant water dropping aircraft called super scoopers. they're also assaulting this by helicopter as well. german chancellor addressed congress today, a few days shy of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the berlin wall. she pushed for a deal to combat global warming saying we have to time to lose. earlier she met with president barack obama at the white house. today's was the first by a german chancellor to congress in more than 50 years. if you ever lost your luggage, hope it wasn't in phoenix. fortune a thousand pieces of luggage have been found in one home. the couple that live there stole it all from sky harbor international from passengers there. the pair is now under arrest. would you pay a tax on your text messages? well, it's one of the things people in california are voting for today. voters will decide on expanding the utility tax to include text

million on an basis. that will be up from $9 million in september. although slightly lower than a year ago. sales are not up across the board. chrysler sales fell 30% from a year ago, chuck. >> that beat estimates, i think, right? >> yeah, bad but not as bad as expecte expected. >> could a turn around at those companies mean we'll get our money back? >> therein lies the $62 billion question since that's how much they owe in bailout money. but the treasury department is unlikely to recover the full investment in chrysler or gm. not to say taxpayers won't get anything. especially if gm issued new stock, as is expected some time next year. in the meantime they want the treasury to keep a close eye on the investment at gm and chrysler. they're recommending treasury hire people for the job and put together a formal plan for the ownership stake. we're not talking ford in the case because they did not take

candidate doug hoffman has a chance to win because the republican nominee abruptly quit the race last weekend. this gop candidate endorsed her democratic opponent, bill owens. a special election will fill the seat. a new poll has just been released on voter attitude and motivation this election day. let's go to deputy and political director paul stein hauser with this. hot off the presses, we love polls. what is the highlight of this poll, paul? >> national poll survey, you're talking about the 2009 elections, i'm looking ahead to 2010. as you know, next year you can have all of the house. you can have a third of the senate up for grabs as well, so this mid-term elections for congress, democrats are going to try to keep control in both houses. we asked if the election were held today in your district and you had a choice between a generic democrat or republican, who would you vote for? you can see right there, half of americans say democrats. just slightly behind the

republicans. it's kind of within the sampling era, so it's really close, michelle. >> which block of voters seems particularly motivated this time around? >> you are so right about turnout. last year the democrats were motivated and the democrats did great in the congressional elections. looking ahead to next year, we asked are you going to be enthusiastic and energetic about voting in the elections? you can see by a slight margin, more republicans say they're more enthusiastic about voting next year than democrats. >> is president obama a factor? >> oh, yeah. he will be a factor. next year's races will be about the candidates and these races spent the same time. it's about barack obama. we asked, would you lean more towards voting for a candidate who supports barack obama or opposes him? you can see right there more people say they would vote for the candidate who supports president obama than opposes him, michelle. >> there is going to be a lot of

people elbowing to be on his coattails again. >> the democrats for sure. health care has been a pretty hot topic for americans, but have health issues changed for black men in america? one expert says it's at a crisis level. we'll look at that coming up in a special "what matters."

it's been a year since the historic election of president barack obama. all week in our "what matters" partnership with essence magazine, we're taking a closer look at life for black men since president obama was elected. has their lives changed since the president became black? we sat down with an african-american community and asked that question. today meet marcus murray, executive director of project brotherhood, an organization that addresses health and social issues facing black men in

chicago. >> i believe life has changed a little bit in the sense that black men get a little bit more respect when they're looked at on the street, but in terms of any -- covering any disparritid, whether it's health or something, i don't think anything has changed. >> what about life expectancy? has that gap narrowed at all? >> i don't think the gap has narrowed at all. when i think of health, you have to think of different factors like the social factor, the economic factor, the spiritual factor as well as the physical factor. these things haven't narrowed at all just from barack obama becoming the president. >> are any of those that you see at a crisis level? >> i think black men in general, i think we're in a crisis. i think it will take, you know, a collective -- like a

collective resource of everybody in this country to help elevate black men and get us back to being human beings and treated like human beings. >> when you look at barack obama, with the exception of the smoking that we're not absolutely certain that he's completely given up, but besides that, we know that he exercises, we know that the obama family in general seems to try to put forth a healthy image, that they exercise, they try to eat healthy. do you think that that's something that other black families can try to connect with? do you think that that can make any type of difference? >> yes, i think that's essential, because people just learn from learned behavior. if we see the president eating healthy and exercising, it's definitely going to influence black men from all over this country to eat healthier, to exercise, but we still have to look at the full picture. sometimes in our community, we don't have fresh fruits and vegetables.

there might be so much violence, we don't feel safe or comfortable exercising. so we have to address those issues as well to become healthy young men. >> marcus also says that women play a key role in encouraging not just black men but all men to take their health seriously and see a doctor regularly. black men in the age of president obama continues tomorrow when we take a look at black men in sports with tom williams, the first black head football coach at yale university and only the second in the ivy league. for more on what matters check out the november issue of essence magazine or click onto cnn.com/whatmatters. kids are ignoring those age requirements on myspace and facebook. there's a requirement, you have to be at least 13 to get on those sites. kids will pretend they're older and just sign up. 38% of kids between 12 and 14 have those on-line profiles.

i bet parents don't know about it. too much exposure at such a young age can lead to computer daxz, even brain damage. however, there is no solid research to actually back that up. what do you think about kids being on social networking sites like myspace and facebook? i got a phone call. chelsea is calling us from oklahoma. chelsea, what do you think? are you a parent? >> yes, i am. >> what do you think, do you have rules about this with your kids? >> caller: yes, i have a 13-year-old who has a myspace account, but i have the password. so i get to go in, i check her chat logs, i read her mail, and i found out stuff i wouldn't have known if i hadn't had that tool to use as a parent. so it's a tool for me. >> has she ever gone right up against the line when you have thought about cancelling that account on her? >> caller: oh, i don't cancel it, i change her password for a

month. it's a foregone restriction. >> chelsea, thank you for sharing your phone call and some of your tricks. sara says this: i agree with the proper monitoring, kids should be able to access these social sites. it does seem like there are a lot of stories how it enables family and friends to remain closer. i think it boils down to good parenting of the children. there are some adults who shouldn't be on these sites. how about we monitor them? it's the new television for kids. i agree with young children doing fun activities on line, but not social networks like facebook or myspace. that's for teenagers that may be impossible tore parents to monitor every time, so parents need to talk to them about being safe on line before they sign up. let's get back to the phones. kevin is calling us from idaho. kevin, what's your take on this? >> caller: my take on this is we should have a facebook, jr. for

people 16 and under and then your standard facebook for people 16 and above. and that way, you know, these kids have a way to network with each other, sometimes kids move away, they can't keep in touch, and then you would absolutely have a one-time if any adult tries to create a facebook, jr. account, they will be absolutely banned forever from ever using facebook again. >> i do like where you're going with that because then you say thad be with their peers. that's what i was thinking is that would kind of let the adults that were up to no good, you would let them know immediately where the young people were so you have to work out the kinks there. but i like your thinking. >> denise says, some of my children ages 10e and 14 have facebook accounts. it is a good way for them to keep in contact with their friends.

inspect or frederick stours. first of all, is that information correct? five to eight separate fires dwrur wo you're working? >> there were multiple starts. we don't know exactly how many there were. at this time, the fire is at about 50 acres. it covers about a four-mile stretch along the 60 freeway, and you are correct, it's about 25 miles outside of downtown l.a. where these fires have originated. our crews have worked very hard, along with the air operations to get a quick handle on this fire. and we can't say that it's contained -- excuse me -- can't say that it's contained at this time, but they are getting a good handle on it. >> are you looking at any evacuations right now?

>> no. at this time we haven't been given any word of any evacuations. again, those are being looked at as necessary. contingency plans are being put in place if we need to do evacuations. >> are you thinking after arson with this? >> no, we're not thinking arson. investigators will have to get in and see exactly how it started. these fires are burning alongside the freeway through a long stretch. there is so many precipitating factors that could cause this that we're not just tunnelling in on arson fire. >> best of lung keepick keeping thing under control. we appreciate it. >> thank you. stocks spent most of the day in the red, but did they end that way? stephanie elam is at the business desk in new york with the wrap-up on the trading day and news of a brand-new gadget.

several breaking stories we are following right now. first to these live pictures. this is southern california. there's been an outbreak of brush fires. i spoke with the los angeles county fire inspector a few moments ago. he told me the fires are burning, about 50 acres of them in a four-mile stretch mostly along state route 60. several lanes of eastbound 60 are blocked because of this. so far no one has been hurt, no buildings have been damaged. the biggest concern is the diamond ranch area. so far there are no injuries, no evacuations, but fire officials say that clearly could change at any minute. as you can tell when you look at

these fires, this is a ridge of suburban neighborhoods 25 miles east of downtown los angeles. also breaking news from cleveland. more discoveries at the home of a rape suspect. the source close to this investigation confirms to cnn at least one more body has been found. our affiliate wews was reporting as many as four additional bodies have been found, meaning there may be ten corpses in all at the home of anthony sowell. he is still in jail on a rape charge that is not at all related to the bodies found at his house. police are still searching his home, as well as a vacant house across the street and a boarded-up school a block away. again, possibly ten bodies, and there's going to be a press conference in a little while. a seventh person has been arrested in connection with the homecoming gang rape case in richmond, california. police and a swat team arrested a 21-year-old man early this morning on charges that could lead to life in prison if he is convicted. so far five suspects have been

charged in the case. a sixth person was released for insufficient evidence. new security measures have been put in place at this high school in california where police say a 15-year-old girl was gang raped. searchers combing north dakota rangeland for three missing college students have found nothing, no trace of these women. the only lead for police so far is from a friend who got calls from these women sunday night. both calls mentioned water and they said they needed help. the three women played softball for dickinson university. police believe the women were out star gazing. they are in a jeep cherokee with california plates. a nun who police say was murdered has been found in arizona. she did not show up for services monday in new mexico. a colleague went to find her and found her dead on church

property. >> the fbi themselves was taken aback that this is one of the most gruesome and difficult criminal investigations, one man said, in his 20 years of experience. >> the fbi won't say where the vehicle was found. authorities are waiting on autopsy results before they release any more details on this killing. a judge has ordered some documents be excluded and others redacted in polygamist raymond's trial. they argue the trial judge improperly seated a trial juror in the jeffs case. jeffs was convicted of two counts of felony rape in his role and a follower to her 19-year-old cousin. he is the head of the fundamental list church of latter-day saints.

a young iraqi woman is dead. she appeared just hours after he appeared in court in arizona. our affiliate has more. >> 20-year-old noor malecki left her husband in iraq, moved in with her boyfriend here and was getting into modelling. it enraged her father, who appeared in court. malecki admitted to running her friend and daughter over with his jeep. >> he says the reason is his daughter brought shame to his family. >> malecki fled halfway around the world to london before he was caught, and the prosecution suspects his family helped him run. >> we believe his family has given him assistance in his escape. >> as woord of noor's death spreads, friends are pasting memories and notes on her facebook and myspace pages.

offering its first degree in hip-hop. nicole lappin is here to drop some knowledge. >> hip-hop usually attracts people from studying, richelle, but people are actually going to school now to study hip-hop. this is a course at mcnally college and they study the history of hip-hop. professors there liken it to the study of jazz. it's a three-semester course, 16 students. they are studying rap history composition, they are studying the music industry for hip-hop. one student says he dropped out, richelle, from his community college but then this program lured him back to academia, if you will, and he hopes to become a drummer. >> i just love this idea so much. kids, you're not going there to

learn how to rap. there is so much more to it than that. maybe it will get some students interested who had given up on school just like the one you had talked about. >> yeah, there we go. >> i like this next story, too. a ranch in the middle of queens. this is a great story, too. >> it's really helping out a lot of folks, richelle. these are kids that, according to them, would have otherwise been caught up in shootings and robberies, and now they're learning about the old west. it's changing their lives. the stables are run by the federation of black cowboys and it opposites along a highway. but kids say it helps them stay away from the life of drug deals and gang activity. most are from housing projects in and around the brooklyn area, in and around kwooenz. they come here at night without worrying about getting shot.
